LATEST PHOTO (May 16):
![]() ORIGINAL POST: Here's my first venture into planted tanks. Everything in the tank is "from Asia". The one unconfirmed plant was sold to me as Cyperus helferi, but it seems as though it is either Sagittaria subulata or Vallisneria americana both of which are from the Americas. If that's the case, my Asian theme goes to the wind! Gonna have to pull it, and find some more Asian plants. Set up on July 6, 2008. 10g tank (standard) AquaClear mini Petcetera HOB filter (50-100 gph?) Visi-therm heater (75 degrees) Fluorite substrate 1 - 1 1/2" 2 x 23w Philips Daylight 6500K w/clip on lamps Tap water treated for chlorine Hagen CO2 (I change the mix once a week to help keep it consistent) 8 Harlequin Rasbora (I tried to get Trigonostigma espei, but couldn't find any locally at the time) 1 T. espei (found one!! gonna trade the Harlequins in when they get more espei) 1 yellow Betta Hygrophila difformis Java Fern Sagittaria subulata or Vallisneria americana (unconfirmed) Battling some BGA and GHA right now on the H. difformis. I don't understand why I have BGA when I have nitrates...? I'm hoping the new clip on lights will help as the light I had before really sucked. Looking for more plants!!! If you have some Asian plants you want to sell, please let me know! ![]() You can see the one Espei in the group of Harlequins. ![]() "Sunny", who is turning into a "Peachy" as I am feeding so much Cyclopeeze! ![]() My bubble ladder with 35 bubbles on it, going at 1 bps. ![]() ![]()

I don't use Excel. I have CO2, and I thought Excel was a CO2 replacement?

For the record, I'm a dudette.
![]() I just swapped out the Petcerta HOB filter for an AquaClear 200. So now there's a mini and a 200 on it. So that's 300 gph filtration. Hopefully it will help with the BGA. The Rasboras are loving the flow - they are all crowded around the highest point of flow playing in it, or exercising maybe? I'm hoping the higher flow and thus increased surface agitation will help with the film on the water surface too. My plants started pearling for the first time today, so I guess they like the new lights and CO2. ![]() Pearling: ![]()

I had to boil mine for an hour or so to get it water logged. It was such a pain in the butt that when I realised I cut the bamboo about 2 inches too short I have been too lazy to replace it so far! ![]()

Hi Myka, awesome tank. I'm kolewolf's wife and I want a tank just like yours. I have flowerhorns and the 'asian' theme would be great. Where did you get your bamboo?

Would Flowerhorns knock the bamboo around? If so, they would just dislodge it. I got the bamboo at Michael's. It was fairly tough to find. It was $15 for only six 5' sticks. I cut them to length with a chop saw. It waas easier to find thicker stuff that was about 1" around. I found that in Wal-Mart. It might work better for your Flowerhorns. It would be a better balance I think due to the size of the Flowerhorns...?

Judy, you can use lucky bamboo to make a bamboo wall at the back. It's actually really good to maintain water quality that way as well. All you have to do is anchor it well and you're set.

I've heard that the live lucky bamboo will just rot and die in the aquarium. Besides, the yellow color of the bamboo gives great variation in the mostly green tank!

^didn't know that. I've seen a few setups with that kind of a background and I liked it very much. I thought that as long as the the top is above the water and the substrate is rocky everything will be just fine.

I have lucky bamboo in vases. I think I'm going to put the vases and bamboo straight into the tank. The FHs won't be able to dislodge that. Thanks you guys.
Myka...when your plants grow in, be sure to update us with pics. |
